London Underground achieves Carbon Trust Standard

Using public transport is almost always a greener option than driving a car, especially in a city environment, and even more so now that London Underground (LU) has become one of the first public transport operators to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard, in recognition of its work and results and ongoing commitment to improve its carbon efficiency. The Standard has been awarded to LU based on actions and achievements over the last three years (from 2006 to 2009) as well as LU’s plans to reduce carbon emissions in the future.

Are you ready to commit?

The CRC EES has been designed to avoid overlapping existing schemes and so emissions already captured by Climate Change Agreements or the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme will be excluded...The Early Action Metric has been split into equally weighted factors, smart metering and the Carbon Trust Standard. The Carbon Trust Standard has been designed to encourage good practice in carbon management and to help organisations improve their green credentials by committing to reducing their carbon footprint. It can be easily integrated by organisations already working to minimise their carbon impact or a great starting point for organisations that need to develop an energy policy.

The CRC is upon us

In the first three years of the scheme, Early Action Metrics apply to the scheme and will boost an organisation's league table position if it is achieved. The first metric is voluntary automatic meter reading. The second is the percentage of annual emissions (CRC declared) which are covered by the Carbon Trust Standard. This scheme covers a wider scope of emissions, not just those from energy consumptions and can only be achieved if you have reduced your carbon emissions over the last 3 years.

The meter is running...

After training and awareness-raising comes reviewing operating procedures and processes and assessing how to use existing equipment more efficiently, believes Harry Morrison, general manager of the Carbon Trust Standard - a government based scheme that assesses and certifies organisations' progress at measuring, managing and reducing their carbon impact. Just under 250 UK organisations have been certified under the Carbon Trust Standard since the scheme was launched just over 18 months ago. "These organisations have measured their carbon footprint; they understand the impact of their operations; they've got an active programme to manage it and they are improving performance," adds Morrison.

Guess who's going to have to buy carbon credits?

With the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) looming aound the corner, the online news has been full for the last week or so with stories of those that are doing good and those that will have to buy carbon credits to meet requirements. Some of those that are doing a good job are giants like HSBC who have, yet again, managed to reduce their carbon output by another 10% and who become the 100th achiever that the Carbon Trust Standard Company has certified. The first 100 companies certified by the Carbon Trust Standard Company cut their combined carbon use by 600,000 tonnes, saving themselves a combined £50m in energy bills.

Counting the cost

Yorkshire’s farmers are currently trying to perform a difficult balancing act of monitoring their costs while reflecting the demands of their customers. Up there with the major commercial requirements is the ability to produce good quality food with a minimal effect on the environment… The Carbon Trust Standard that was introduced a year ago has become the environmental certification scheme recognizing the commitment of companies who have dramatically reduced their carbon footprints. The Standard is widely recognized by customers and is therefore a desirable asset for a company to hold.
